Jiu-Jitsu is one of the safest martial arts a child can learn, and one of the most useful. It teaches kids how to control a situation without throwing a punch. But safe depends on the program, so here is what to look for.
Coaches, not babysitters
A kids class should be run by a coach who trains kids on purpose, with a plan for the class and an eye on every pair. Ask who coaches the class and how long they have done it.
Age-appropriate technique
Young kids learn position, movement, and escapes. Submissions are introduced gradually, later, and under close supervision. If a program has seven-year-olds cranking arm locks, walk away.
Kids train with kids
Ready to try a class? Your first one is free.
Children should never be paired with adults or with kids far outside their size and experience.
A viewing area
You should be able to watch every class. If a gym does not want you watching, ask why.
Clean mats and clear rules
Mats cleaned daily, nails trimmed, no shoes on the mat, and a coach who stops a round the moment it gets sloppy.
Ask these questions at any gym you visit, including ours. A good program will be glad you asked.
